A detector is mounted in the chamber to collect back-scattered electrons reflected from the surface of the work-piece. When the beam is scanned across the joint the intensity of electrons reaching the collector plate decreases and enables the system to determine the joint position with respect to the free-falling beam. Joint finding can be calibrated to perform offset correction through CNC movement or deflection in a “Teach and Replay” process.
