Crack Prevention Strategy
- Eliminate the initiating defect (liquidation/solidification)
by altering the time/temperature/stress distribution immediately
adjacent to the weld
- Reduce the stress level on crack initiators
as the material
cools through its ‘ductility dip’ by altering the
time/temperature/stress distribution slightly further from the
weld pool
Integral
Cosmetic Pass
Advantages of an integral
cosmetic pass include:
- Process applicable to most materials
- Less distortion than separate
treatment and faster
- Applications
- Improved appearance of both top and bottom weld bead
- Potential
for integral surface modification
Seam Tracking
- Joint lines can distort prior to or during welding
- Seam tracking
by backscattered electrons automatically aligns the beam
and
the joint line
- Tracking and correction can be carried out during
welding
